Narcos is a show that is viewed by two different groups, says Newman. Newman, however, thinks that people have become too rigid these days to change their views. But, if I tell you about a little kid who lost his mom and dad to violence, and specifically describe how he felt and show you how he is going to lead the next ten years of his life in a shelter, you are going to care about it. “If I tell you today that 2,50,000 people have been killed in Mexico in the last 12 years, you will say that is a horrible number. “Storytelling is an important tool to bring change,” he says. The show may have been high on violence, but Luna defends it. According to Luna, it is imperative to watch such shows to understand what is happening in the underbelly of the drug business.ĭark and daring: A still from Narcos: Mexico. “It is very important to tell the story of Mexico and to bring attention to an issue that needs to be solved,” he says. Luna looks at the human angle of the story and says that it is important to tell the story of his country. He adds that he understood most of his character after talking to Camarena’s wife. He was a very famous Latin American in terms of law enforcement,” says Pena. “It is weird that I did not even hear about him. Pena admits that he, too, did not know about Camarena. Luna, who was just six when the Camarena episode unfolded in his country, says he became aware of the drug wars only after he turned a teenager. The two actors were the first choice for the key roles, says Newman. While American actor, Michael Pena-born to migrant parents from Mexico-plays Camarena, Mexican star Diego Luna plays Gallardo. Set in 1980s, Season 4 will feature the tales of the Guadalajara drug cartel-formed by Miguel Angel Felix Gallardo-and Kiki Camarena Salazar, a Mexican-born American undercover agent for the United States Drug Enforcement Administration, who was abducted and murdered in Mexico. It may not have been creatively tough, but Narcos is not an easy show to do. We lost Pablo Escobar and his entire operation after Season 2, and, now, we have lost Pedro Pascal and Cali cartel. Because we start afresh every new year,” says Newman.“We get rid of everybody and start over. “It may not have been creatively tough, but Narcos is not an easy show to do. The first two seasons narrated the stories of Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar, and the third featured the Cali cartel that moved in after Escobar’s fall.Įric Newman, the show runner and writer of the new season-Narcos: Mexico-told THE WEEK that he always wanted to tell the story of the migration of the cocaine trade from Columbia to Mexico, that happened after the fall of Escobar and the Cali cartel. It sets the premise for the new season of the acclaimed series on drug wars-that the drama would become grittier and darker, may be more than the first three seasons. “It is easy to forget it is happening,” the voiceover continues, “until you realise, in the last 30 years, in Mexico, it has killed half a million people, and counting.” Season four of the Netflix drug drama Narcos opens with a bird’s eye view of Mexican city Guadalajara in 1985, and a voiceover which tells that it is going to be a story that does not have a happy ending, or no ending at all.
